Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of characters, and a exciting storyline showcasing celestial beings, fiends, and sinister influences expanding in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season are included.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

Episode 3 ended with a huge suspense moment and introduced the initial group of heroes who will split off from the main group to undertake their independent quest, distinct from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table includes Teor (played by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Given an extensive roster, it was obvious from the outset that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

Hence, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, intertwining the characters’ stories before splitting into three separate parties: Warriors, Strategists, and Seekers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

According to the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for players who are drawn to a traditionally charged battle-oriented narrative style where peaceful solutions are scarce.

At first glance, characters like the hesitant healer the cleric might appear mismatched, but the developments of the latest installment show why these particular heroes are best suited for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

First, the party knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal first encounter with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose death initiated the story’s plot—exploited the enemy for his selfish purposes, breaking into the secret base, assaulting the rogue, and swiping all the enchanted items to sell off.

The antagonist then settled his liabilities and fled to a secure base in the remote area, above the city, with Cyd close behind.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each adventurer has a personal reason to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and closest confidant, wants revenge.
  • The adventurer knows the region and advises that it is a hostile place.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having defied his relatives’ demands to kill Teor and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their status as important members in the powerful family could enable the party access locations they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character swore a eternal obligation to The savior for his rescue and will now accompany him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the rulers that govern the city for a range of causes, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The rogue and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and The cleric turned against the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by the family.

This means them no alternative but to head to the remote area in pursuit of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

According to the recent installment’s post-show segment, we discover that the Soldiers table will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the rest of the cast members to form the Seekers and Strategists groups.

Audiences can look forward to learning which adventurers will be in which group in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on next week.
