Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt significant concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain conservative figures to launch the attack.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding those documents for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader discourse on the right was comparatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that came before the legislative vote to pass a law requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were given physical folders of materials that included little new information.
