A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
