In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
